The Ultimate 2-Minute Winter Bike Check

The 2-Minute Winter Bike Check

Keep your bike smooth, safe and winter-ready with this quick pre-ride routine.

Winter riding brings colder temperatures, wetter roads, and a little extra wear on your bike. The good news? You can prevent most problems with a super-fast 2-minute check before each ride. Whether you’re heading out for a December commute, a club run, or a festive coffee spin — this quick routine keeps your bike running beautifully.

What you need: Just your eyes, your hands, and 2 minutes. No tools required.

1. Check Your Tyres

Your tyres are the only contact point between you and the road — and winter roads can be unforgiving. A quick tyre check prevents punctures and improves grip.

What to look for:

  • Cuts or cracks: Small slits can grow under pressure.
  • Embedded flints or glass: Flick them out before they become punctures.
  • Bald or flattened patches: A sign your tyre is worn out.
  • Firmness: Give the tyre a squeeze — soft means underinflated.
Bonus Tip: Winter tyres or tubeless setups massively reduce punctures.

2. Check Your Chain

Your chain works harder in winter due to wet conditions and road grit. Keep it clean and lubricated to extend component life and enjoy smoother shifting.

What to look for:

  • Dry or rusty links: Add lube before your ride.
  • Squeaking or grinding: A clear sign it needs attention.
  • Skipping under load: May indicate chain stretch or worn cassette.
Quick Fix: If your chain looks silver and shiny — it needs lube. If it’s black and gritty — it needs a clean.

3. Check Your Brake Pads

Good brakes are essential on wet, cold and unpredictable winter roads. A quick visual check ensures you have full stopping power.

What to look for:

  • Pad material remaining: If you can barely see any pad, it’s time to replace.
  • Even wear: Pads wearing unevenly may need realignment.
  • No scraping: Spin the wheel — you should hear nothing rubbing.
Disc brakes: If you hear metallic scraping, stop riding — your pads may be completely worn.

Your Bike Will Love You For It

That’s it — tyres, chain, brakes. Three quick checks, two minutes, and your bike will feel better, ride smoother, and last longer throughout the winter.
