The all-new Trek Domane Gen 5

Trek Domane Gen 5 — everything that's changed, and why IsoSpeed is gone

The Domane, rebuilt

Since 2012, when it won Paris-Roubaix in its first season, the Trek Domane has been the endurance road benchmark — the bike for group rides, all-day epics, rough lanes and riders who want to go fast without being beaten up. The fifth generation launched this week, and it's the most significant rethink the platform has ever had.

Lighter, by a lot

The headline is weight. The Gen 5 frameset is 300g lighter than Gen 4, and on the lightest build the complete bike drops 2.1lb — nearly a kilogram. The SLR frames are built from Trek's top-shelf 900 Series OCLV carbon, with optimised tube shapes that cut weight while reducing road chatter, in a deliberately simplified overall frame design.

Bigger tyres, no penalty

Gen 5 ships on 35mm road tyres and clears up to 40mm — proper all-road territory. That means comfort, control and confidence on rough tarmac, loose surfaces and hardpack gravel. And Trek's testing puts it just as fast as the Gen 4 even on the bigger rubber, because speed isn't only aerodynamics: energy lost to vibration is energy you don't turn into forward motion. More comfort and better connection to the road means you can ride faster for longer.

The end of IsoSpeed

Here's the change that will raise eyebrows: after 13 years, IsoSpeed is gone. The decoupler that defined the Domane was engineered for an era of 25mm tyres. With 40mm clearance, lower pressures and the new compliant frame and 27.2 seatpost working together, the job it did is now done better by the tyres and the carbon itself. Trek's whole-bike comfort metric — which measures vibrational power reaching the rider through the bars and saddle — puts Gen 5 within 5% of the previous generation. Same comfort, simpler frame, lighter bike.

A cockpit built for real riding

The new bar adds 20mm of rise at the hoods, creating a more relaxed position without compromising efficiency — an upright posture that's also a sustainable aero position on the hoods. The tops are backswept, putting hands and wrists at a more natural angle for long days out.

Built to live with

This might be the most quietly important part: a traditional 27.2 round seatpost, a threaded T47 bottom bracket and a universal derailleur hanger. Three choices that make the bike easier to service, customise and keep for the long term — exactly what an endurance bike should be. Add mounts for fenders, a top tube bag and a frame bag, and it's ready for everything from winter commutes to all-day epics with space for all the snacks.

SLR or SL?

Two frame levels. The Domane SLR is the flagship: 900 Series OCLV, premium builds, and full customisation through Project One — where you can change part sizes like bar width and crank length for free, and choose from thousands of hand-painted colour options. The Domane SL keeps the identical geometry, fit, tyre clearance and ride philosophy in 500 Series OCLV at more approachable prices.

Who is it for?

If you ride in Cornwall, you already know: rough lanes, broken surfaces, long climbs and weather. A bike that's stable and more upright than a race bike like the Madone, takes a 40mm tyre, carries mudguards, and still has — in Trek's words — a little bit of Madone snap. This is the bike for most of the riding most of us actually do.
